Institutional Initiatives Supporting Sustainability, Campus Well-Being, and Community Awareness. The initiatives page highlights applied institutional efforts that support sustainable development, improve campus experience, and strengthen sustainability awareness across the UHB community.

Initiative 1

UHB Sustainability Roadmap 2030: Building a Framework for a Responsible University

Launched 2022 Strategic Planning SDG 4, 11, 13, 17

Launched in 2022 to formulate a comprehensive sustainability strategy aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 and global recognition frameworks.

In 2022, the UHB Excellence HUB initiated a structured sustainability roadmap to embed sustainability principles across all university operations and academic programs. The initiative provides a systematic framework covering environmental responsibility, social equity, institutional governance, and research excellence — guiding the university toward measurable performance outcomes.

Vision: Position UHB as a nationally recognized leader in sustainable higher education by 2030.

Mission: Integrate sustainability into policy, curriculum, campus operations, and community partnerships.

Goals: Reduce environmental impact, strengthen SDG-aligned research, and build institutional capacity.

UHB Green Campus Living Lab: Transforming the Campus into a Smart, Healthy, and Resilient Environment

Launched 2023 Campus Transformation SDG 3, 7, 11, 15

Initiated in 2023 as an applied project to transform UHB's outdoor and indoor spaces into a sustainable living experience that models environmental responsibility.

A well-designed campus is inseparable from the quality of students' educational and personal experiences. In 2023, the UHB Excellence HUB launched the Green Campus Living Lab initiative — a phased transformation of campus facilities, green areas, and communal spaces into smart, energy-efficient, and biodiversity-friendly environments. The initiative applies evidence-based design to support student well-being, reduce the university's environmental footprint, and demonstrate sustainability in practice.

Why It Matters: Campus spaces shape students' health, engagement, academic performance, and sense of belonging.

Living Lab Purpose: Convert campus infrastructure into a testbed for sustainable design, renewable energy, and biodiversity solutions.

Key Outputs: Solar canopies, native landscaping, smart irrigation systems, and wellness zones across campus.

UHB Sustainability Awareness Campaign: Cultivating a Culture of Responsible Action

Ongoing Awareness & Culture SDG 4, 12, 13

A university-wide initiative to raise sustainability literacy, drive behavior change, and embed sustainability values within the UHB community.

Universities have a unique responsibility to model sustainable behavior and translate knowledge into action. This initiative mobilizes faculty, staff, and students to become active participants in UHB's sustainability mission through targeted awareness campaigns, social media outreach, green events, and peer-led education programs. The campaign measures its impact through the annual Sustainability Awareness Survey, tracking shifts in knowledge, attitude, and behavior over time.

Primary Focus: Shift campus attitudes and behaviors toward environmentally conscious and socially responsible choices.

Community Role: Students and staff co-design awareness materials, events, and digital campaigns for maximum reach and relevance.

Impact Measurement: Annual Sustainability Awareness Survey tracks progress and informs the next campaign cycle.

Portfolio Overview

Taken together, UHB's institutional initiatives reflect three strategic directions: long-term sustainability planning aligned with Vision 2030, applied campus transformation through design and technology, and culture-building through community awareness and participation. Each initiative contributes measurably to UHB's performance across global recognition frameworks.

STUDENT IMPACT

Student Projects

Applied sustainability projects led or co-led by UHB students — translating academic learning into real-world impact on campus and in the community.

2024 SDG 7, 13
Solar Energy Monitoring Dashboard for UHB Campus

College of Computer Science & Engineering

An IoT-based monitoring system to track real-time solar energy generation and consumption across campus buildings.

Students designed and deployed a dashboard that aggregates energy data from campus solar panels, enabling the university to optimize usage, identify inefficiencies, and report carbon savings transparently.

2024 SDG 6, 11
Smart Water Conservation System for Campus Irrigation

College of Engineering

A sensor-driven irrigation control system that reduces water waste in campus green spaces by up to 40%.

Students developed a low-cost, automated irrigation system using soil moisture sensors and weather data integration. It selectively irrigates campus gardens based on real-time conditions.

2023 SDG 12, 15
Campus Waste Audit and Recycling Activation Program

College of Arts & College of Education

A student-led waste audit project that mapped waste generation across UHB and launched a targeted recycling program.

Students conducted a full campus waste characterization study, identifying high-waste zones and designing an engagement campaign to increase recycling participation.

2024 SDG 3, 10
Student Mental Health & Wellness Peer Support Network

College of Applied Medical Sciences

A student-operated peer support program that promotes mental health awareness and connects students with counseling.

Students designed a structured peer support model with trained student counselors, awareness workshops, and a digital resource hub aligned with UHB policies.

2023 SDG 4, 17
SDG Classroom: Embedding the Global Goals in UHB Courses

College of Education

A curriculum enrichment project mapping SDG content into existing course syllabi across all UHB colleges.

Students partnered with faculty to review syllabi across all eight UHB colleges, identifying opportunities to integrate SDG themes and producing a Green Curriculum report.

2024 SDG 8, 12
Sustainable Procurement Scorecard for UHB Suppliers

College of Business Administration

A capstone project developing a scorecard to evaluate and rank UHB suppliers on sustainability and ethical standards.

Students designed an assessment tool that evaluates vendors on environmental practices, labor rights, and transparency — supporting responsible institutional purchasing.

Student Impact Summary

UHB student projects demonstrate the practical application of sustainability knowledge across all colleges. From energy monitoring and water conservation to mental health and ethical procurement, these projects contribute directly to UHB's institutional sustainability performance and enrich students' professional readiness.
